How is the Value of Norwegian Football Players Determined?
Norwegian football players are highly attractive on the transfer market. With historic success in national teams and strong performances from Norwegian clubs across Europe, there has been increased interest from international clubs.
But how does the market determine a player's value?
The Impact of the World Cup
Major tournaments often serve as launching pads for players to join bigger clubs. While Transfermarkt data shows that few players are discovered during a World Cup today, the tournament acts as validation of a player’s skill level. Club scouts already follow players globally, but performances against top teams can boost interest and acquisition willingness from larger clubs.
Nordic talents like David Møller Wolfe, Andreas Schjelderup, and Antonio Nusa could see their market value increase significantly after the World Cup.
A New Price Class
The development over recent years highlights how much the market around Norwegian players has changed. Increased interest in Norwegian players is also noted by Bodø/Glimt's Sports Director Håvard Sakariassen, making Eliteserien more appealing.
Just a few years ago, a $10 million player transfer generated considerable headlines in Norwegian football. Now such amounts are becoming part of the new normal. In 2021, Erik Botheim was the biggest transfer from the Eliteserien with a transfer fee of $74 million; four years later, Sverre Nypan joined Manchester City for $180 million.
The total value of player transfers from Eliteserien has also grown significantly. During the 2021/22 season, collective transfer revenues were around NOK 463 million. In the previous season, that figure rose to approximately NOK 1.018 billion, according to Transfermarkt data.
This means Norwegian clubs have increased their transfer income by over 125% in just a few years.
A Unique Situation
Norfolk Director Joacim Lund Heier is not surprised. He believes this has happened before after the World Cup championships of 1994 and 1998, with many Norwegian players joining good teams afterward.
He states that Norwegian football's current situation is unique. When all these factors - team quality in leagues, UEFA success, and national team performances - coincide, it greatly enhances the attractiveness of Norwegian players for upcoming months.
– When all this happens simultaneously, it will inevitably affect the value of Norwegian football players and how attractive they are. With the transfer window opening now, interest from World Cup performances can mean a lot more than just match results.
