The Norway national football team's all-red kits caused frustration during their match against Iraq in World Cup 2026. Erik Lindquist, a red-green colorblind supporter, had trouble seeing the players on the field. He told TV 2 that it was almost impossible to see the Norwegian players and their play in a satisfactory way. The reason is simple: he is red-green colorblind. It was particularly the strong signal red color of the Norwegian kits that caused problems. When the TV images showed the entire field, the players almost merged with the green grass. In close-ups, however, it was much easier to see them. Erik has not experienced problems with the national team kits before, even though he has been colorblind his whole life. About eight percent of Norwegian men and one percent of Norwegian women are colorblind, according to the Norwegian Association of the Blind. Most have problems distinguishing between red and green, some have problems with yellow and blue, while the fewest are completely colorblind. Tor Paaske Utheim, consulting eye professor and eye doctor at the Norwegian Association of the Blind, says that red kits against a green field can therefore be a challenging combination, especially on a small screen, with fast movements and poor lighting conditions. He believes that there are a few measures that can make the football experience a little more enjoyable. According to Utheim, it is particularly important in football to avoid kit combinations that only differ from each other through red-green contrast, as this is the most common form of color weakness. Erik Lindquist is far from alone in being colorblind, and he hopes that the Norwegian Football Association can be made aware of this. Communications director at the Norwegian Football Association, Yngve Haavik, says that it is the International Football Association that has the final decision regarding the kits. He says that NFF has submitted various alternatives with color combinations, but it seems that Fifa prefers all-red from top to toe. Erik Lindquist believes that the solution to the problems with the national team kit is simple: if Norway had blue or white pants, the problem would be gone. He will not miss Norway's next World Cup match, even if he has to watch even if they wear all-red.
